Zwelihle  2012  Update

  • The people of the Sacred Heart have sponsored uniforms, shoes and fees for over 150 school children in Zwelihle Primary, Quayiya and Hawston Schools in the township. In addition, we have paid for the total care of three AIDS orphans as well as supporting Hospice patients and Elderly people at Siyazama Day Care Centre. In addition, we have supported the St Vincent de Paul in Zwelihle to provide food for 200 families in desperate need.


  • The WAVE project (Waterford Assisted Ventures and Enterprises) is now well established. This is a group of ten business people from Hermanus and Overstrand, working voluntarily with the people in Zwelihle to establish small business ventures. WAVE has provided small loans to over 250 people, at a low interest rate. Some of the loans are for small business ventures which creates employment, improve skills and most importantly, provide income for families in the township. In addition to this, WAVE has begun to act like a “mini credit union”, providing small home improvement loans. In July this year, loans for 230,000Rand (€20,000) had been approved and were being repaid weekly. There were also 150 people from Zwelihle saving weekly with WAVE.


  • The Sacred Heart – Zwelihle Parish Twinning Project has raised over €100,000 in the past 5 years.
